The worldwide concern over the management of healthcare waste has increased in recent years, and the Philippines is no exception. Issues related to medical waste, such as collection, treatment, and disposal, have gained attention. Incineration has raised concerns, leading to a renewed focus on segregation and recycling. To address these concerns, two significant legislations have been enacted: the Clean Air Act (Republic Act No. 8749) prohibits the burning of biomedical waste and mandates the phase-out of existing incinerators by July 2003, while the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 (Republic Act No. 9003) requires proper segregation, recycling, and composting of the non-infectious portion of the waste stream.
This report specifically addresses solid waste generated in healthcare facilities. Every healthcare facility, whether providing care for humans or animals, generates some form of waste, the quantity, composition, and characteristics of which vary based on the type of healthcare facility.
